Stump Grinding.

Grind stumps below grade in Jacksonville and surrounding NE Florida cities — single stumps to whole-lot bulk jobs.

Overview

Stump Grinding in Jacksonville, FL.

A tree's gone but the stump's still sitting in your Jacksonville yard, hollowing out, attracting termites, sprouting suckers, and making your lawn mower swerve around it every weekend. Stump grinding is the fix: a fast, clean way to get the stump below grade so you can sod, replant, build over it, or just put your yard back together.

Brother's Tree & Land Clearing grinds stumps across Jacksonville, Mandarin, Orange Park, Fleming Island, St. Augustine, Nocatee, Fernandina Beach and surrounding NE Florida cities. We handle single-stump residential jobs and multi-stump commercial sites — same crew, same equipment, same standard.

Our grinder takes hardwood and softwood stumps alike — live oak, water oak, pine, sweetgum, palm — and chews them down 6 to 12 inches below grade as standard, deeper on request. The stump turns into a pile of mulch in the spot, which you can keep, spread, or have us haul off.

Florida's humid climate makes stumps a real problem. Untreated stumps in NE Florida are termite magnets, breeding grounds for fungal rot, and an open invitation for the original tree to send up sucker shoots from the roots. Grinding kills both problems before they start.

Below-Grade Grinding
Why It Matters

Reclaim Every Square Foot.

We grind stumps 6–12 inches below grade as standard — deep enough that you'll never know it was there. Need it deeper for a foundation or hardscape? We can take it as deep as the job calls for.

Wood chips left from the grinding can be hauled off, mulched into your beds, or piled where you want them. Your call.

Our Process

How We Get It Done.

01

Free Quote & Site Check

We come out, measure the stump (or count them — we do bulk-stump pricing), check for any irrigation lines, septic, or shallow utilities, and give you a written price.

02

Underground Utility Check

Before grinding starts, we make sure we know what's below: water lines, sprinkler heads, propane, low-voltage cables. Anything we should avoid gets flagged.

03

Grinding Below Grade

The grinder chews through the stump 6–12 inches below ground level. For pool decks, foundations, or hardscape, we can take it deeper. For replanting a tree in the same spot, we can grind down to 18+ inches.

04

Mulch Disposition

The wood chips go where you want them — left on-site (great for filling the hole or mulching beds), spread into your landscape, or hauled off. Your call.

05

Site Cleanup

We rake the area, fill the depression with the mulch (or topsoil if you prefer), and leave it ready for sod, gravel, or whatever you're putting there next.

Clean Yard

Bring Your Yard Back to Life.

Below-grade stump grinding means sod can grow, lawn mowers can mow, and your yard is whole again.

Honest Pricing

What Affects Your Price.

No two jobs are exactly alike — here are the main things that move the number up or down on a written quote.

Stump Diameter

Most stump grinding is priced per-inch of diameter measured at ground level. Bigger stump = more grinding time.

Stump Count

Single stumps are pricier per-stump than bulk jobs. We discount multi-stump and whole-lot jobs significantly.

Grind Depth

Standard is 6–12" below grade. Deeper grinding (for pool decks, replanting, foundations) costs a bit more.

Access

Front-yard stumps with truck access are easiest. Backyard, fence-gated, or stairs-only access takes more time.

Wood Type

Live oak and sweetgum are harder than pine. Palm stumps are fibrous and slow. Most jobs aren't priced by species, but it can factor in.

Mulch Removal

Leaving mulch on-site is free. Hauling it off adds modest cost.

Our standard is 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough that sod, soil, or grass will completely cover and you'll never know it was there. We can grind deeper for foundation work, pool decks, or if you want to replant a tree in the same spot.
Your choice. Most homeowners have us fill the hole back in with the chips (free option, makes for great mulch). Others want it hauled off — we charge a small added fee for that. Some want us to spread the chips across landscape beds.
Yes. Palm stumps in Florida — sabal, queen, washingtonia, date — are fibrous rather than woody and grind a bit differently, but our equipment handles them all. We grind palm stumps regularly in Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, and across the coastal NE Florida cities.
Generally no. We grind the visible stump and the immediate root mass directly under it. Lateral roots extending out into your yard usually stay alive and stable. We don't disturb roots more than a few feet from the stump.
A small single stump takes 20–30 minutes including setup. A massive oak stump can take 1–2 hours. Multi-stump jobs are usually a half-day to full-day depending on count and access.
Yes, if we grind deep enough. For replanting, we grind 18+ inches deep and remove the wood chips so you have soil-ready space. The new tree's roots won't be blocked by old wood.
Absolutely. About a third of our stump grinding work is for stumps left behind by other companies or DIY removals. Send us a photo and we'll quote it.
